Director of Orthopaedic Education and Research Institute of Southern California Vance Gardner is the director of the Orthopaedic Education and Research Institute of Southern California and spinal surgeon by training. He is a member of the Scoliosis Research Society, American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons and North American Spine Society. He received his BS degree from the University of Southern California and MD from Washington University in Saint Louis. After his residency in orthopaedic surgery at the University of California, Irvine, he completed a one year fellowship in spinal surgery at the University of Ottawa, Canada in 1986 and then joined the faculty at Irvine. The molecular mechanisms of spinal cord injury were his research interest at the university. In his present position at the Research Institute, he has focused on orthopaedic tissue engineering and imaging spinal ischemia and its relationship to degenerative disc disease.
